The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy has launched an energy independence project to provide most of its buildings with their power supply. The initiative was first supported by Naftogaz Group and Ukrnafta PJSC, as well as the Kyiv Mohyla Business School. This was reported on the university's website.

Why is the KMA energy independence project being implemented?

According to NaUKMA, the goal of this project is to ensure the continuity of the educational process and the stable functioning of all university departments, even in the face of power outages. Achieving energy independence, in particular, thanks to the support of partners, will allow the Academy to avoid possible blackouts that complicate the university's work and impede the quality of the educational process.

“As a responsible energy company, Ukrnafta supports education in times of war and power outages. Today, more than ever, it is important to ensure the continuity of education, as this is the foundation for the restoration and development of the state. We believe that such projects help to strengthen the country's resilience to the challenges of war and create new opportunities for young people,” said Olena Artazey, Deputy HR Director of Ukrnafta.

Other partners are also involved in supporting the project. Negotiations are currently underway with them. In general, by the end of spring 2025, it is planned to ensure energy independence for 75% of the Academy's buildings.

What is planned to be done in KMA to avoid power outages?

The project envisages the installation of alternative sources of electricity: a hybrid solar power plant with solar panels, batteries, and backup power generators. During the first stage, it is planned to power the second campus. This will allow four buildings and the University's Cultural and Art Center to be fully powered during a prolonged blackout.

The first stage is scheduled to be completed in early February 2025. After all the technical work on connecting the equipment is completed, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy will be able to create the necessary conditions for uninterrupted power supply and ensure a full educational process during large-scale power outages.

“Supporting educational institutions is a contribution to the future of Ukraine. The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is a landmark place where a new generation of leaders is formed. Maintaining its energy independence is important to ensure a continuous educational process, even in the most difficult times. For us, participation in this project is a responsibility to society and a contribution to the development of the educational space, which should work smoothly, regardless of external circumstances,” said Ivan Lukerya, Member of the Board, Director for Corporate Affairs of Naftogaz Group.
