Ukrzaliznytsia has, for the first time in its history, organized the transportation of petroleum products from Germany to Ukraine using its own railcars, the state company’s press service reported.
Details
The transportation of petroleum products from Hamburg to the Ukrainian border was carried out by UZ Cargo Poland Sp. z o.o. — a subsidiary of Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ), which acts as the official freight operator within the EU. Specialized ZACNS-type tank cars designed for the European standard gauge of 1435 mm were used for this purpose.
Ukrzaliznytsia already carries out regular rail shipments from Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Italy — and now also from Germany. Thanks to this, import volumes have increased by 5.4% in the first half of the year, reaching 5.3 million tonnes, according to UZ.
However, the overall freight transportation trend remains negative: 79.6 million tonnes of cargo were transported in the first half of 2025 — 11.8% less than in the same period last year.
Who Imports German Gasoline
According to Naftorynok, in January–July 2025, total rail imports of all gasoline grades rose by 20.6% compared to the same period last year. The share of supplies from Germany increased by 36.8%, accounting for 20.8% of total rail imports.
In June–July 2025, rail deliveries of gasoline from Hamburg were made exclusively for UPG and BRSM-Nafta.
Background
In April, it was reported that Ukrzaliznytsia’s European subsidiary had for the first time transported petroleum products via the Lithuania–Poland–Ukraine route.
