India maintained its leading position in the diesel fuel supply structure for the second consecutive month in August 2025, according to the analytical publication NaftoRynok Daily Fuels&LPG.
Details
Indian-produced diesel fuel accounted for 18.1% of the supply base in August, up from 15.5% a month earlier, while physical delivery volumes increased by 42.8% compared to the previous month, reaching 3.8 thousand tons per day. This is the highest level since July 2023.
Who imports diesel from India
The main volume of Indian-origin diesel arrives via Romania – accounting for 94.9% of deliveries from key regional traders: Euronova Energies, Alkagesta, SOCAR Petroleum, and Oscar Downstream – mostly in large shipments transported by river along the Danube (79.7% of the volume from Romania) and by rail (17.2%). Road shipments from Constanța, Roman, and Ocna-Mureș together accounted for 3.1% of Romanian deliveries in August.
The remaining supplies were provided by the Wexler group through the sanctioned OPET Petrolculuk terminal at the Turkish port of Marmara Ereğlisi.
2025 vs. 2024
According to NaftoRynok’s estimates, over the first eight months of 2025, imports of Indian-origin diesel fuel increased more than sixfold compared to the same period last year. The share of supplies from India reached 11.6% in 2025, up from 1.7% a year earlier. In the import structure, Indian-produced diesel ranked fourth for January-August 2025, following Turkey, Greece, and Slovakia.
It should be noted that secondary EU sanctions on petroleum products from Russian crude came into effect on August 27, 2025. From January 21, 2026, imports of such products from third countries will only be allowed with confirmation of their non-Russian origin, and importers must provide the corresponding documentation. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on goods from India, citing efforts to counter a country that purchases Russian oil. However, India also processes crude from the Persian Gulf and other regions.
