The volume of diesel fuel imports by rail in December 2024 increased by 14.4% compared to the previous month, reaching the highest level since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to the analytical report NaftoRynok Daily Fuels & LPG.

In December 2024, rail imports of diesel fuel accounted for 40.1% of the total diesel supply, up from 38.1% in November. This is one of the highest shares recorded in 2024. The peak share of rail imports was observed in January (42.8%).

What Diesel Fuel is Supplied to Ukraine?

More than a third of the imported diesel fuel in December was brought by rail from Poland, produced by PKN Orlen. Supplies originating from the U.S. (from Valero and Marathon refineries) accounted for 16.4% of the rail imports in December.

Diesel fuel from 13 producing countries was imported into Ukraine in December. Approximately 82% of rail-imported diesel fuel crossed the Poland-Ukraine border.

The top three suppliers of rail-imported diesel fuel are the operators of the OKKO, UPG, and WOG gas station networks. The top five importers in December 2024 also included the state-owned company Ukrnafta, with wholesale trader Martin ranking fifth. Based in Chernivtsi, Martin accounted for 6% of diesel imports by rail tank cars in December, making it the largest rail supplier among traders.
