Naftogaz of Ukraine NJSC is studying the prospects of increasing the production of natural gas from coal seams in the Lviv Region. This was announced by the head of Naftogaz Oleksiy Chernyshov.

"This line of work will increase the volume of national gas production, make coal mining safer, and strengthen Ukraine's energy independence. In addition, it will help to reduce the emission of harmful gases in accordance with EU directives," says Chernyshov.

According to him, in Ukraine, one of the highest indicators of methane content per ton of coal is about 25 cubic m/t. For comparison, in Canada, it averages 2.5 cubic m/t.

Currently, Naftogaz is conducting pre-project preparation. The details of the project are still unknown, as are the possible volumes of natural gas production.

As reported by ExPro, Ukraine reduced gas production by 6% in 2022 - to 18.5 bcm. Ukrgazvydobuvannya JSC produced 13.2 bcm of gas, 3% less than last year. Commercial gas production of UGV amounted to 12.5 bcm.
